"Special Educational Needs in European Schools" (SENSES) is a Comenius multilateral partnership which brings together three European institutions that already cater for pupils with a wide range of special educational needs: The Kingfisher Community Special School (U.K.), Scoala Speciala Transilvania (Romania) and MACI Foundation Preschool  (Hungary).
We recognise that there is already a vast array of expertise and good practice within each of the participating countries and we aim to direct partners to examples of this in our own countries.  We will focus on the sharing and development of pedagogical methods – for example, the teaching of pupils on the autistic spectrum, pupils with motor disorders, the use of augmentative communication, the development of a range of different therapies – and within this we will look at multi-professional approaches and co-operation.  We aim to focus on leadership within special education and particularly on its impact on European Co-operation.
Although SENSES is largely a pedagogically focussed project we feel strongly that it should impact on the curriculum and learning of the pupils in all the partner institutions.  This will be addressed by pupil links between schools (this has already begun), work on regional areas and traditions, music, language, the environment and sustainability.  We also see this project as an ideal opportunity to develop the area of global citizenship for pupils with special educational needs within each school.
We have already learnt from our previous projects that European Co-operation has a massive impact of the continuing professional development of staff. Having this in mind, we intend to produce training materials and practical work packs and workshops for dissemination within each participating country as a result of our project mobilties.
We strongly hope that in this period of two years (2007-2009) our professional, cognitive and emotional resources dedicated to SENSES will bring efficient results on educational, therapeutic and social level.
This web page is intended to be one of our jointly final outcomes started in this early moment of the project because we are going to share in that way our goals, activities and to disseminate our results.
We would like to create a great source of information dedicated to special education teachers and therapists, parents with SEN children and community members.
